Significance & Context

Thawban (رضي الله عنه) reported that when the Prophet ﷺ finished his prayer he would seek forgiveness three times then recite this. Addressing Allah as As-Salam upon completing prayer acknowledges that all tranquility in the prayer came from Him — ending worship by returning its gift of peace to its source.
