Significance & Context

The nuclear family is intended to function as an impenetrable emotional sanctuary, a concept captured perfectly by the poetic Qur'anic idiom 'coolness of the eyes' (Qurrata A'yun). In the harsh, unforgiving environment of 7th-century Arabia, 'coolness of the eyes' was a literal metaphor for ultimate relief, tears of profound joy, and safety from the blistering elements. Sociologically and psychologically, this supplication seeks to make the home a zone of absolute psychological safety.
